Watford owner Laurence Bassini has explained the reasons behind the sale of star striker Marvin Sordell on transfer deadline day.

The 20-year-old, who found the net 10 times for the Hornets this term, was heavily linked with a January move which finally arrived at the 11th hour as the club accepted an undisclosed bid from Bolton, which is reported to have the potential to rise to around

Coyle’s Tactical Madness Defies Explanation

1329908732 84 Coyles Tactical Madness Defies Explanation

It’s not often that you can say the discontent of angry Bolton fans can make you think of Conservative propaganda, but the loss to Wigan on Saturday certainly reminded me of some.

The Conservative party’s 2010 general election poster campaign used the phrase ‘I’ve never voted Tory before, but…” followed by a reason to vote Conservative.

After reading the messages by fans and listening to them after the game, the majority started their comments with – ‘I’ve never criticised Owen Coyle before, but…’  followed by a resounding criticism of his tactics and formation.  And I couldn’t agree more!

Even the pre-match team announcement was met with confusion and groans by Bolton fans. They knew that the exclusion of Muamba and the return of Kevin Davies meant a 4-4-2 formation, and they were not happy about it.Immediately the message boards and facebook feeds were awash with fans questioning the manager’s reasons for moving away from the 4-5-1. Few could understand the point of ditching a system that had been so successful during our mini-revival, especially as it was the very same change  that was roundly blamed for the defeat at Norwich the week before.

I am willing to accept that some will point to Wigan’s poor run going in to the game and their poor record against the Wanderers in the Premier League as an opportunity to be more adventurous, but few could disagree that the change has served only to disrupt our consistency and unbalance the team.

In my opinion, Coyle has a huge amount to answer for the past two defeats and i’m not totally convinced that given the chance he could adequately explain his decision from a tactical standpoint. Although Wigan are at the bottom of the league they’re still a capable passing outfit and they possess some real pace in key areas. By opening up the game he gave them a foothold from the first whistle and they were able to get in and behind far too easily. Surely the focus should have been on stifling the Wigan threat with high tempo pressure in the middle of the park and then look to exploit their back line frailties with our own attacking quality.

Its worth noting that if Coyle made the change to accommodate the return of Kevin Davies then he needn’t have bothered. The fans have known for some time that he doesn’t have the legs any more and the rest of his game has diminished to an unacceptable standard.

Frankly, Coyle has to cede his stubborn position on this and face the fact that 4-4-2 does not work for Bolton at this time. The losses to Norwich and Wigan have put us under serious pressure going in to the Chelsea and City games and we’ve lost out on potentially relegation saving points.

Burnley boss Howe still optimistic over play-off place – Burnley FC – Burnley Express

1329905118 97 Burnley boss Howe still optimistic over play off place Burnley FC Burnley Express

CLARETS boss Eddie Howe believes his side can still mount a play-off push if they can reproduce performances like the one at Reading.

A 1-0 defeat at the Madejski Stadium on Friday night was a second successive loss on the road, but the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story.

Burnley dominated possession, hit the woodwork twice, and had the better chances, while playing some of the most attractive football they have played all season.

Four points behind Birmingham in sixth place – who have two games in hand – it will be a tall order to make the play-offs, but Howe said: “There are still a lot of points to play for.

“The real positive is, you can count the games off where we’ve performed well against all the top sides.

“That was one that’s gone against us, but long-term, if we continue to perform like that, we’ve got a great chance.

“I’ve said all season we’re getting better with every game, and I firmly believe, although we will have the odd dip now and then, we’re progressing really well as a team.

“The lads are beginning to really start believing in themselves, so that’s real positive. The result went against us, but I think it was a moral victory in terms of how we played.”

And he was thrilled with a stylish display against the Royals: “I thought we started the game really well. In the first half we were very good, and passed the ball really well.

“I can’t compliment the back four and midfield enough, they were very brave to want to get on the ball. That’s the hardest thing to do sometimes in a big game like that when you’re under the microscope, but I thought the lads responded really well.

“We created enough chances in both halves to get something out of the game.

“We did really well against Barnsley in terms of retaining the ball and keeping it and moving it from side to side, but Friday was a progression from that where we sliced Reading open at times. It was just in and around the box where we felt perhaps our quality wasn’t up to its usual standard.

“We hit the woodwork twice, their keeper’s made a couple of great saves.

“To be fair to Reading, they defended the lead very well in the second half, broke the game up and slowed everything down, which was incredibly frustrating for us.

“You want the game as quick as it can be but they killed the game, almost.”

Jason Roberts’ scuffed finish 11 minutes in proved decisive, and Howe admitted: “I was disappointed with the goal, it was a scrappy one. It’s never nice to concede any goal, but I thought that one was particularly poor, which is unlike us of late.

“For the majority of the game we defended very well. They’ve got two very lively, quick wingers, and I thought we did well against them for the majority of the game and just switched off the once.”

Ben Mee’s astonishing block – putting his head in the way of Noel Hunt’s shot – drew praise from all quarters, with Michael Owen saying on twitter it was the “bravest defending I’ve ever seen”, and Howe agreed: “He is very, very brave.

“He’s had a great season. He’s another one that’s improved throughout the season, and I’m really pleased with him.”

Mee was more modest, claiming it was just pure instinct: “It was a bit of a shock. I wasn’t expecting it to hit me in the face, but you just put it there and see what happens.

“It could have been a turning point but in the end it wasn’t to be, unfortunately.

“I thought we played well enough to go on and win the game.

“It’s just one of those things.”

Win Brian Clough Tribute book

1329903931 20 Win Brian Clough Tribute book

Marcus Alton has compiled a new book entitled “The day I met Brian Clough- and other tributes. We have reviewed the book and now give you a chance to win it

We have been privileged yet again to be asked to review the new publication from DB Publishing. This latest book is a tribute to the late great Brian Clough and has been compiled by Marcus Alton.

The book focuses on the great esteem that almost all people who have met Brian Clough hold the greatest England manager, never to be in. People from all walks of life have contributed to the compact paperback and they all have on thing in common, their love and respect for the legend that is, BRIAN CLOUGH.

Players who have played under Brian give their view on how he made the sides he managed tick. I have to say the book is very heavily bias toward our great East Midlands rival Nottingham Forest but I think even Derby County fans will forgive the references to the Reds in this delightful view into peoples meetings with Brian and the kind hearted man that people didn’t see when he was on the TV.

Having personally met Brian I can vouch for the great sense of humour he had, even when I had the privilege of meeting him just months ahead of his death.

The book goes on to bring us anecdotes from football fans around the World from a York City fan to the Australian Nottingham Forest supporters club.

This book is a must have for those of us out there who loved Brian Clough and all the Royalties will be going to the Brian Clough memorial fund, so what better time to bag yourself a great little read. There are 189 pages of pure enjoyment as the tributes and stories of meeting Brian Clough come thick and fast. An ieal Christmas stocking filler for just £9.99, available from all good book stores, or click here to buy on-line.

If you fancy entering our competition we have copy of the book to give away absolutely FREE!

All you need to do is answer these two question:

1…How many times did Brian Clough win the European Cup with Nottingham Forest?

2… In what season did Cloughie win the English Championship (now Premiership) with Derby County?

When you have both answers please send them to us at

all answers to contain your name and snail mail address (just in case you win) and the winner of the book will be drawn and notified on Sunday 30th October…

UPDATE and news from the book compiler Marcus Alton:

There will be a reading of sections of the book, followed by a Q&A session on Brian Clough at Waterstones, in Derby on Thursday November 3rd. Admission is just £2 and that can be refunded off the price of the book.

Law enjoying goals flourish

1329893117 38 Law enjoying goals flourish

Motherwell midfielder Nicky Law has revealed he is benefiting from a concerted attempt to spread the goals around the Fir Park team.

Law has been at the forefront of Motherwell’s goalscoring renaissance, hitting three goals in five games to add to his solitary previous strike this season. Motherwell had been struggling to score at Fir Park – netting just five times in eight games before Christmas. But a group meeting to focus their efforts on sealing third spot in the Clydesdale Bank Premier league prompted a determination to move responsibility for goalscoring around the team.

Motherwell have now scored 19 goals in six home games ahead of the visit of Hibernian. Motherwell manager Stuart McCall, who coached Law at Sheffield United and Bradford, has also been urging the creative midfielder to get on the scoresheet.

“Since I was 16 he was telling me that I needed to score more goals,” Law said. “Maybe after seven years it’s finally settling in. Recently I have probably had a few more shots. I could have had four or five goals on Saturday, but I was happy with one in the end.

“It’s something for the last couple of weeks I have been looking to do because I have always assisted quite a lot of goals. To get them as well is important. To get three in five games is brilliant and I’m looking to carry that on.

“The manager has said to try to be a bit more selfish rather than always looking to play someone else in and if I’m 20-25 yards out have a dig. I’m not being big-headed but I do have a decent shot. We seem to be getting goals from all areas of the park. We have spoken about that and happily there are four or five of us chipping in rather than relying on Higgy (Michael Higdon) or Murph (Jamie Murphy) all the time.”

This little Spanish maestro is a joy to watch and is only going to get better. I'm always on target, but This reeks of stupidity. This is newfound info. Is there anywhere people distinguish sterling english premier league methods? I know it's going to be difficult for some gents. It would be instructive if you used english premier league 2012 to not last as long as expected. I needed this to be a rapid solution. Robert Pires completes the list of 3. By Camilla Mancini On Saturday the Red Devils opened the second day of matches from the last round of 2011, playing against Blackburn Rovers, which has been in the relegation zone since round 6. One of the most talked-about sides in the world, the perennial poor neighbours of United for so many years now have the finances in place to blow anyone out of the transfer market.? I don't believe in curses or stuff like that. They lacked a lot last season and with players getting old, I expect him to make big changes to the team. Back from the break and down by 2 goals the Wolves were able to shorten distances through Steven Fletcher's goal, but the scoreboard wasn't going to suffer anymore changes after that, which allowed Liverpool to climb to fifth place in the standings with 10 points. Having invested in youth over the summer with the likes of Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David De Gea, many believe Sir Alex Fergusons team will retain the title. At one point we were certain that would successfully defend their title again but after a bad run of form, they were stuck in a sand pit that they took too much time to get out of. Hopefully Ferguson will play him with Berbatov and not opt for a negative 4-3-3 again, as he did against Arsenal. From the Blue Square North on the other hand it was Barrow and Kettering Town who made the upwards move to the Blue Square Premier. You can't miss my unwise comments as to english premier football. Like Neville, his first job was to defend, but he could still provide the support for his winger.

Samir Nasri eager to prove Manchester City switch ‘wasn’t a mistake’

1329887119 23 Samir Nasri eager to prove Manchester City switch wasnt a mistake

Samir Nasri is determined to prove his move to Manchester City was not a mistake.

The France midfielder initially struggled to make an impression at the Etihad Stadium following his £24million move from Arsenal last August.

The 24-year-old is still to replicate the consistently high standards he produced for the Gunners last season but he feels he is now settling into a rhythm.

Nasri has still completed the full 90 minutes just nine times for City but said: "It is always tough when you change and go to another team.

"You have to be involved 100% and at some points I wasn’t.

"Now I am starting to be settled and you will see a better Samir every week.

"You have to work when you don’t feel well and you haven’t produced what everyone expects from you.

"But I was always confident about my quality and you will see that.

"At Arsenal I was playing a little bit higher with three strikers and three midfielders. Here we play 4-4-2 so you have to work more defensively.

"But that doesn’t matter. I have understood that and I want to show everyone that it wasn’t a mistake."

Nasri’s move angered Arsenal fans but he feels he made the best move for his career as City chase the Barclays Premier League title while the Gunners labour in pursuit of a top-four place.

He insists, however, he takes no delight in Arsenal’s present situation.

Manager Arsene Wenger is coming under increasing pressure at the Emirates Stadium after a 4-0 thrashing by AC Milan in the Champions League last week and an FA Cup loss to Sunderland.

Nasri said: "I don’t want Arsenal to fall down.

"I wanted for them to win the FA Cup or something because I have a lot of respect for the players there and the manager.

"But I know, since I started, I made the right choice.

"We are top of the league, we are still in the Europa League.

"What Arsenal does doesn’t matter. It is my choice."

Nasri expects Arsenal to recover from their problems but has suggested sometimes they might need to adjust their playing style to gain all-important results.

He said: "Sometimes it is good to win ugly. You don’t always have to play good football to win.

"Arsenal is the proof of it. They play good football but, at the end, in seven years they didn’t win (any trophies).

"It is difficult for them but the manager has a good philosophy and I know he will find a solution soon."

Nasri has previously voiced his hurt at claims his move was motivated by money and he says his early-season form was not hindered by the fee City paid for him.

He said: "I never asked Manchester City to pay £24million.

"It was a lot of money but every transfer now has a lot of money.

"What you want to do is give something to the team and the people who brought you here and have trusted you since the start of the season. The money is not my problem."

Nasri will hope to retain his place as City host Porto in the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie tomorrow.

Nasri started as City underlined their intention to take the competition seriously by coming from behind to win 2-1 at the Estadio do Dragao last week.

He said: "Porto are really dangerous, especially in counter-attacks.

"We have an advantage but that doesn’t mean we have qualified. We have to be careful.

"They have good players, we saw that in the first half of the first game.

"We wanted to win everything at the start of the season.

"Now without the FA Cup or the Carling Cup any more we have the Premier League and the Europa League.

"We will be focused on the two competitions and try to win it."

Mancini, whose priority is protecting the two-point lead his side have at the top of the Premier League, is equally determined to make sure City progress to the last 16.

Mancini said: "It is better to start from 2-1 but we know Porto is a top team and we should play like it is back 0-0.

"I feel it is a difficult game. It will depend on us and we will need to play very well."
